Gang that helped ‘El Chapo’ operated with false identity cards

A former public servant is a key piece to confirm if Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman came or not to the country more than 10 years ago. There is little data about it: he worked at the Civil Registry Office of Manabi and was arrested along with leaders of Los Choneros. This was a dangerous gang dedicated to drug micro-trafficking, contract killings and other crimes.

The investigations even established possible links of its main leaders with ringleaders of the Sinaloa cartel, which was led by Guzman. In 2013, the police had already identified that Los Choneros used fake IDs to operate in the country.
