Kofi Annan will step down as UN and Arab League special envoy for Syria, announced today the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, in a statement.

The six-point peace plan designed by Annan to end the Syrian conflict was never implemented.

Ki-moon expressed his deep gratitude to Annan and likewise his deep sadness at his decision.

The General Secretary of the UN reported that discussions have already begun to designate a successor for the abandoned post. MZ
