Minister Sade Fritschi granted authorization for access to genetic resources as a conservation tool in Galapagos
This February 3, 2024, the signing of a Framework Contract was made official, between the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Ecological Transition and the Biosafety and Quarantine Agency for Galapagos (ABG), through which, the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Ecological Transition, authorizes access to genetic resources of endemic and introduced species of the archipelagos, for management and research purposes.
The event was attended by Minister Sade Fritschi, Jean Pierre Cadena, Executive Director of the ABG and Washington Tapia, General Director of the Conservando Galapagos Foundation and the Galapagos Conservancy, the latter being a strategic ally, through which the technical-scientific part of genetic studies and the promotion of conservation measures based on the results of research.
This Framework Contract called: “Use of molecular tools to understand the population genetic structure of key species, with emphasis on ecosystem restoration in the Galapagos Islands”, has a duration of three years and will allow the development of taxonomic and identification research projects. of introduced species.
This information contributes to improving the current management of chelonians both in the wild and in breeding centers.
