Patiño Questions Transparency in the Election of the IACHR Secretary

Ricardo Patiño
This morning, Foreign Minister of Ecuador Ricardo Patiño, blamed Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of not being transparent in the selection of their new secretary. The Mexican Emilio Alvarez-Icaza was chosen yesterday as the new Executive Secretary of the Commission.
“We do not know why they want to hide a process that should be genuinely open and transparent, not secretive, confidential and dark, as the Commission is considering,” said Patiño, who also said that the Commission denied information about the process to “any of the contestants”, which did not identify, and said that is something “serious.”
“This is another case of lack of transparency and failure of due process by the Commission,” said Chancellor and announced he will file a complaint with the Secretary General of the OAS, José Miguel Insulza.
