Solar Storm To Shower Earth with Radioactive Particles
Posted On 24 Jan 2012
According to NASA a huge solar storm is expected to send a shower of radioactive solar particles racing towards Earth at almost 1,400 miles a second this week.
The flare, caused by a large eruption on the sun’s surface last Sunday, is expected to damage GPS systems and other communications when it reaches the Earth’s magnetic field on Tuesday. Solar flares are the largest explosive events in our solar system; it can last from ten minutes to hours.
NASA officials stated that the flare might also spark an unusual large display of auroras that could be visible at lower latitudes. The solar storm of this week has been seen in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Yorkshire, in Northern England. (AV)
