The Superintendence of communication and information (Supercom) will initiate actions against newspaper Extra, which could end up in a prison order for not rectifying three news published in 2013. But the newspaper considered that there were no arguments for the provision, since the newspaper had not spread any false news. For this reason, it challenged it before the Court of the contentious-administrative.
Carlos Ochoa, authority of the Supercom, explained on Monday February 10 that Extra had to accept the resolution, in accordance with article 55 of the law of communication. “No one is above the law. Diario Extra had the respective due process so they can present evidence to fade the allegations, but they did not do so.”
Therefore, the entity started an administrative process to identify a possible relapse in the case, according to article 23, paragraph 3 of the law, as the newspaper refused to comply with two orders of rectification.
The first, by the two news broadcast about the accident in which the Rector of the Polytechnic School of Chimborazo died. The second, by a note which was based on a judicial record that still had no judgment rendered.
The case against Extra newspaper was one of 67 processes known by the Supercom. Among them is also the penalty to El Universo and cartoonist ‘Bonil’, as well as the one against the RTS channel.
