The Campaign For The Yes and The No Options Starts Today
The official campaign for the referendum starts today. At the moment, there are 60 political subjects enrolled by the National Electoral Council (CNE), 29 of them will promote the Yes option, 17 groups support the No option, and 9 are equally supportive of the two options that answer the questions made by President Rafael Correa. The remaining 5 groups are provincial movements that will campaign for Question 8, which proposes to ban the killing of animals in shows.
Politicians can get fundings for elections’ advertising through private contributions which limit is $ 1.6 million for the five questions of the referendum, and $ 1.6 million for five of the popular consultation. They can also access the funding provided by the state through advertising slots in the media.
CNE spent $ 5 million to ensure this constitutional right, the money was evenly distributed: 50% for those who support the Yes option and 50% for the No option supporters, which is $ 2.5 million per option, that represents $ 500 thousand per question, Omar Simon, president of the CNE, affirmed.
Political actors will not receive cash, but spaces in the media (radio, television, newspapers) that they can freely hire, and transmit in the space they consider appropriate to the dissemination of their advertising. Two thousand medias registered for this campaign. The election campaign will end on Wednesday, May 4th, three days before the hearing.
