The London 2012 Olympic Flame was Lit
The flame of the Olympic Games of London 2012 was lit on Thursday in Olympia, Greece.
The High Priestess Ino Menegaki was commissioned to proceed with the lighting of the torch, following the Greek tradition, in which god Apollo was invoked in the Temple of Hera, using a concave mirror to reflect sunlight.
The ceremony took place in the presence of many personalities from various sports federations.
“With this torch, we will lift the spirit and hope of people across Britain and around the world” said Sebastian Coe, chairman of the Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games of London 2012, in a speech.
The Olympic torch will now begin a one-week trip throughout Greece, visiting five major archaeological sites.
The Olympic Games of London 2012 will be held in London from July 27 to August 12. (ARL)
