Up to 3 years of imprisonment over media lynching offense
That might be the sanction for committing the crime of media lynching, a term that was introduced in the recently approved Communications Law.
The proposal of punishing with 1 to 3 years of imprisonment was an initiative of Assembly member of Alianza PAIS (AP), Maria Augusta Calle, in order to introduce it in the new Criminal Code, which is being analyzed in the Commission of Justice and Structure of the State, chaired by Assembly member Mauro Andino.
The proposal also provides for a fine of 2% of the monthly billing of the media and 4% if there is a repetition of the offense.
The Commission of Justice will define in the upcoming days whether to accept the proposal for further discussion or not.
Article 26 of the Communications Law regarding the media lynching states: “The dissemination of information, directly or through third parties, that is produced and constantly published through one or more media for the purpose of discrediting a person or company or reduce its public credibility, is forbidden”
