With the state of emergency the Executive power seeks to ban the demonstrations, according to Paez
Opposition Assemblyman Andrés Paez, of the Creo movement, in an interview with Ecuavisa, referred to decree of a state of emergency by the unusual activity of the Cotopaxi volcano issued by President Rafael Correa, to which he said: “One thing is declaring an emergency in areas surrounding the volcano and another thing is to declare a state of emergency throughout the country.”
For Paez, if a situation of this nature by the potential or probable eruption of the Cotopaxi volcano is justified, then we should be in state of emergency since 15 years ago the Tungurahua volcano has been active and erupting, “therefore, the only thing that is revealed is that this decree seeks to achieve prerogatives in favor of the Executive power that has to do with constitutional guarantees that are fundamental.”
“We assume that the Government has issued this decree in order to have at hand a tool to neutralize the demonstrations that are booming across the country.”
According to Paez, what is the point that the state of emergency governs in the Galapagos if the volcano is in the Cotopaxi province? “what we must make clear is that the government seeks to have on hand the state of emergency for the requisition of goods, to prevent the free association, to ban the demonstrations … “
