21 years after the death of Hector Lavoe, his legacy still remains

Hector Juan Perez Martínez, the real name of Lavoe, born in 1946 in the Belgica neighborhood Belgium, in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and from humble backgrounds, emigrated to New York, United States, where he achieved his dream of becoming a star of Latin music .
The city of Ponce has erected a monument to `The singer of singers,´ a statue of two meters high which represents the artist posing with a microphone in one hand and two maracas in the other, a work of the Puerto Rican sculptor Severo Romero.
The singer of `Aguanile´, `Periódico de ayer ´,` Todo tiene su final´, died at a hospital from AIDS in 1993 at 46 years old , after a life of excess, drugs, alcohol and family tragedies.
