River Plate Stadium is Closed after Riots

The Monumental stadium of River Plate was closed for at least 24 hours after the riots of last Sunday due to the descent of the team to the Second Soccer Division of Argentina. The closing of the building was made to investigate if the board of the sport club authorized the entrance of more spectators.

The riots started after River Plate fell to the Second Soccer Division after ending the match in a tie with Belgrano de Cordoba. Police officers apprehended 50 people, and 68 were injured, 25 were policemen. At least two vehicles were torched and fifteen police patrols were damaged.

Several stores near the River Plate stadium were also damaged during the riots of angered fans. The district attorney’s office opened a case to investigate if the River Plate board allowed the entrance of 53,000 fans against the 45,000 authorized. (AV)
