Delfin Quishpe: “I’ll always be an author and composer whether people like it or not”

Posted On 17 Dec 2011
Internet does not have boundaries, and the video site YouTube has become a tool used by thousands of talented people to be discovered.

“No puede ser! NOOO! ” Is Delfin Quishpe’s catch phrase, an Ecuadorian singer who became a YouTube sensation for his video “Torres Gemelas”.

“Cuando me fui a Nueva York, pensé encontrarme con mi amorcito. Ella vivía en Nueva York y trabajaba en Torres Gemelas” (When I went to New York, I wanted to meet my sweetheart. She lived in New York and worked in the Twin Towers), says the lyrics of the song that launched him to fame.

“The story told in the song is something that happened to a friend of mine. It was originally going to be called ‘Delfincito’ but then I reedited it”, says this unique character who was born in a small town called San Antonio de Encalada in Guamote, province of Chimborazo.

He is the youngest of four brothers, “el del fin” (the one in the end), which is why his parents named him as Delfin Quishpe. “My parents chose this beautiful name and I enjoy it every day,” says the singer who defines his musical genre as “Tecnofolklore Andino”.

The artistic vocation of Delfin Hasta el fin is not recent. He was always linked to music, he taught traditional instruments to the children of his community and was a member of several bands including La Revelación (1997), Sensación del momento (1998) and Jatun ayllu (1999-2000) until he decided to pursue a solo career in 2001 and released his first album entitled “El Faraón del Ritmo”, two years later he launched his second album in 2003 “El Gallito”.

In 2006 Delfin began to be recognized worldwide, his song “Torres Gemelas” was heard by 250,000 people in January and in March, the video had several copies on YouTube and more than a million views with thousands of comments, some positive and some negative, where users mocked the singer.

“My music is a universal language. I don’t care about bad reviews, I have no intention of harming any nation. I’ll always be author and composer whether people like it or not,” says Delfin, who is a fan of Ricardo Arjona’s lyrics and Shakira’s choreographies.

Delfin’s success continued in 2010 when he joined the Peruvian singers La Tigresa del Oriente and Wendy Sulca to release the song “En tus tierras bailaré.” The YouTube video had millions of views, thanks to its dissemination, the trio had the opportunity to perform in Buenos Aires, Argentina to sing in the YouFest in October of that year.

Delfin continues to reap the fruits of his fame in 2011, he starred in an advertising campaign for “Aceite Sabrosón”, released his song “Pequeño Motel”, collaborated with the Quito band “Chaucha Kings” on the song “Canelazo” and received a nomination of the MTV Latino on the Web Celebrity category.

“I am very grateful for this nomination, it’s one more victory for my musical career,” says Delfin, who is already preparing new music singles for 2012.
