Confrontation in Quito over Bullfighting Suspension

Posted On 05 Dec 2012
Bullfighting activity in Quito has decreased.

Bullfighting activity in Quito has decreased.

Since 2011, the bullfights in Quito to celebrate the holidays, have been the subject of political confrontation, and this year, tension has increased over the Citatusa company’s decision to cancel the Jesus of the Great Power Fair.

The peak of the claims occurred last weekend at the bullfights celebrations held in the Latacunga and Belmonte squares, where fans took the opportunity to criticize government and municipal authorities affiliated to the ruling party.

Councilor Maria Sol Corral explained that the city has organized more than 400 activities. However, the figures presented by the Municipality of Quito itself show that the Town Hall has stopped receiving nearly half a million dollars, on behalf of 10% of taxes paid by Citotusa due to ticket sales. Besides, Hotels and Restaurants have also been affected by the absence of bullfights.

The Diabluma group warned that if bullfights are not canceled, they will request, along with support signatures, to convene a referendum to stop bullfighting.

It should be noted that the polling company Opinion Profiles found that 67% of Quito people said that bulls do matter in the celebrations of the capital. (MZ)
