“Intangible Heritage”, the Montecristi hat

A statement was made by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco), “The traditional Ecuadorian woven straw hat is an intangible heritage” of mankind, stated the entity through its Twitter account, while the agency EFE reported that the popular hat known as “Panama hat“, was accepted and recognized by Unesco with this award.

Straw shawl is grown in the provinces of Manabi and Santa Elena, where artisans give the most varied forms, highlighting the hat. The same happens in Cuenca, from where, in large volume, exports of finished products are made.

The news was received with excitement and joy especially by farmers, weavers, exporters and in short to all Ecuadorians.
