Attorney General requests a prison warrant for Pedro Delgado

The Attorney General’s Office, Galo Chiriboga, said during a press conference that the office is prosecuting the case of the former president of the Central Bank of Ecuador and cousin of the Ecuadorian president, Pedro Delgado, although the former official is out of the country. “At the time Delgado will be brought to justice. The detention order is in force,” said the prosecutor.

He also said that the prosecution is in a stage of preliminary investigation and that he personally asked the police to do so.

“I have requested the prison warrant of Mr. Delgado, a measure that the law protects allows me to do and this order, which was granted to the Attorney General for the National Court on Saturday, has already been sent to the police so they do their job,” said Chiriboga the media.

Meanwhile Juan Carlos Carmigniani, attorney of the former official, said yesterday that his client will not appear on January 10 as planned, because he still resides in the United States until January 18 and, therefore, should take his statement through the mechanism of international cooperation at home.

Carmigniani added that last Friday Delgado received a call from Consul Rivadeneira, who instructed him that the ambassador Nathalie Cely, has a proposal for him to return to Ecuador, “he goes to Quito and in return they made efforts to only dictate alternatives measures rather than imprisonment. This proposal surprised us because a diplomatic officer has no bearing on a judge or prosecutor to order what kind of measures are given in a criminal trial that does not even exist.” Moreover the Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño denied that there was any agreement with Delgado so that he returns to the country.
