Eloy Alfaro’s bust destined to Canada held drugs

So it was discovered last Saturday by the Prosecution’s Office, in coordination with the Counter Narcotics Police.

According to the official version of prosecutor, Galo Chiriboga, contamination of the drug, which is in the process of preliminary investigation, was located in a shipment of six boxes with statues of former President of the Republic Eloy Alfaro, which were to be distributed on Ecuadorian embassies in several countries.

When reviewing the shipment, the department’s narcotics dogs detected invisible, intangible, unweighable particles (cocaine hydrochloride residues) in the cargo to be sent to Canada trough a diplomatic suitcase.

President of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, assisted the unveilment act of Eloy Alfaro’s bust at Ankara University in Turkey.

The sculptures were part of the commemoration of the centenary of the Major Bonfire, organized by the Presidency all along the 2012.

The minister of interior, Jose Serrano, appointed the issue as an “act of malice against the government  and the Foreign Ministry”, noting that alleged responsibles are being investigated.

Marco Albuja, chancellor on charge, said that “this is a criminal and reprehensible move, which was intended to soil the name of our country… but they smashed their faces withe their own stones.”

Investigations on the “Diplomatic Suitcase” carry on

Related on the matter, over a year ago, it was sent, from the Foreign Ministry through the diplomatic suitcase, items of cultural promotion and tourism, which were found five days later in Milan (Italy), with 40 kilos of liquid cocaine inside.

The case remains open in the Prosecution’s Office but responsibles within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of our country, have not yet been detected. According to the Prosecution, the perpetrators of the crime were sentenced in Italy and in Ecuador there are not any more involved people.

Ecuadorian Foreign Minister, Ricardo Patino, says he has nothing to do with the “diplomatic suitcase”.
