Ecuador joins the celebration of World Food Day
The United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO,) held today in Rome its 33rd World Food Day, through commemorative events which will run until Sunday and will have as its slogan “Healthy people depends on a healthy food System.”
For five days, there will be events on the importance of food systems for food security and nutrition, food waste and the International Year of Quinoa, a characteristic type of cereal from Bolivia, Peru, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and the United States.
According to the latest FAO figures, a total of 842 million people worldwide suffer from chronic malnutrition, while the unsustainable development models are “degrading the environment, threatening ecosystems and biodiversity that will be needed to the future food supply.”
In Ecuador, several entities have scheduled events to raise public awareness on the importance of protecting food security. Health units, social inclusion and non-governmental organisations will give lectures and recommendations.
