Bachelet ensures Bolivia that she “respects international treaties”

Posted On 15 Apr 2014

This was stated on last Monday by president of Chile Michelle Bachelet, referring to the lawsuit filed by Bolivia in the Court of The Hague that seeks to force Chile to negotiate sovereign access to the sea.

“We respect international treaties , that’s a clear thing” Bachelet said in an interview with Radio Cooperativa about this Tuesday’s presentation in The Hague of the memory of Bolivia, with the legal and historical arguments in the case.

The president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, delivered in Holland, the document to which Chile will have to respond within one year. Bachelet said today she expects to know in detail the contents of the Bolivian memory before her Government makes a public official position.

Bolivia lost its access to the Pacific in a war which, together with Peru, held against Chile between 1879 and 1883 and, since then, the issue has damaged relations between the two countries, which currently have no ties at ambassadorial level.
