Tagging on products of first group of companies is mandatory starting today

From this Friday, August 29, medium and large companies that manufacture, import or sell processed food products, shall have their packaging displayed with the label that indicates the level of sugar, fat and salt using colors red (high), yellow (middle) and low (green).

In November 2013, the Government established by the Regulation on Labeling of Processed Foods, that medium and large companies had to meet this requirement since May 29, but after a reform the term was extended three months.

Carina Vance, Health Minister, said yesterday after participating in the International Conference on Labeling and Fiscal Policies, that they are happy with the level of compliance of labeling. “Until a few days ago we had 95% of the products wit reported labeling,” she said.

From next November 29, the colorful graphics system and other provisions of the Substitute Regulation shall be mandatory for micro and small enterprises.
