Consultation for Catalan independence is suspended by Spanish Court

The Spanish Constitutional Court (CC) today accepted to procedure the appeals of unconstitutionality submitted by the Government of Spain against the sovereignty query of Catalonia on 9 November.

Following the decision, the referendum, formally convened by the President of Catalonia, Artur Mas, on Saturday, was suspended as a precautionary measure.

The decision was taken at a plenary sitting of Court convened urgently following the presentation of the resources of the Spanish government against Consultations law, passed by the Catalan Parliament on September 19 and against the call for consultation.

The filing of the appeal was announced by the president of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, at a press conference after an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers.

The Organic Law of the Constitutional Court requires that the court must decide whether constitutional guarantees extend the temporary suspension before it passes within five months or if he rises it.
