President Moreno grants his first pardon to an environmentalist

President Lenin Moreno announced on Wednesday June 14, 2017, through his Twitter account (@ Lenin), the pardon to Patricio Marcelo Meza, an environmentalist arrested on June 6 in Puyo. He was sentenced to six months in prison for an attack and resistance during the August 2015 indigenous strike.
“The dialogue is starting to work pretty well. I just pardoned Patricio Marcelo Meza Saltos who was sentenced in Pastaza”, was the message broadcasted on the social network. There, the President attached the Executive Decree No. 32, which grants him the presidential pardon, that is, the pardon of the imposed sentence.
The Decree´s execution is now in the hands of the Ministry of Justice, headed by Rosana Alvarado, and will come into effect today, without prejudice to its publication in the Official Register. In document´s recitals, Moreno indicates that this measure was taken within the “context of the national dialogue process proposed by the National Government … to strengthen the construction of a democratic country that respects the dignity of individuals and collectivities.” (I)
