Assembly rejects defense of Morales and Maduro to Correa

The National Assembly of Ecuador today rejected statements recently made by the presidents of Bolivia, Evo Morales, and of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, in support of ex-President Rafael Correa, linked to a court case for the kidnapping of an opponent in 2012.
With 85 votes, from 111 legislators present at the plenary session today, the Assembly rejected the statements of Morales and Maduro as being harmful to the sovereignty and independence of powers that prevails in Ecuador, according to the Legislative on its website.
“The democratic countries we have to make defend our laws, the Constitution and sovereignty” and “reject the anti-democratic criteria,” said lawmaker Byron Suquilanda, to endorse the resolution regarding the statements of the presidents of Bolivia and Venezuela.
“The appointed presidents must solve the problems of their countries and not get involved in Ecuadorian justice,” argued Suquilanda in the debate.
The resolution approved rejects the statements made by the two leaders who, according to the document, try to exert pressure that seeks to damage the principle of sovereignty.
In addition, he maintains that Ecuador is a democratic and legal state and emphasizes that the country is based on the principles of sovereignty and self-determination.
Likewise, the legislators urged the Judicial Function of the country to continue with their work in a framework of independence and in adherence to the laws without pressure or interference.
On his side, the legislator Juan Cárdenas, akin to Correa, described the resolution as a “nonsense” to gain notoriety, but the Christian Social César Rohon said that it is necessary to enforce the Constitution and the Law that clearly condemns the interference of the States in the internal affairs of each country.
The president of Bolivia, in his Twitter account, rejected last week the request for preventive detention against Correa ordered by an Ecuadorian judge, who linked him in a case about the supposed attempt of kidnapping in Colombia of ex-legislator Fernando Balda, which occurred in 2012.
“We reject the request of the Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office for preventive detention against the ex-president of that country, Brother Mashi Rafael. We denounce the politicization of Ecuadorian justice and US interference in the intention of imprisoning an innocent. We are with you Brother Correa. We will win! “Morales wrote.
Also the president of Venezuela, said that after the legal action against Correa there is a “persecution”, which extends to other progressive leaders in the region such as the former presidents of Argentina Cristina Fernández and Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Morales and Maduro were allies of Correa during his administration (2007-2017) and share with him the so-called ideology of “Socialism of the 21st century”.
On July 4, the Government of Ecuador sent “formal protest notes” to Bolivia and Venezuela for the statements of their presidents and summoned the ambassadors of those countries in Quito.
Two days later, the Government of Venezuela protested to Ecuador through a diplomatic note for the supposed “interventionist positions” in the domestic policy and sovereign decisions of the Caribbean country. (I)
