Galápagos gets ready for its Cycling Tour

The carchense Hector Chiles, at 47 years old, revealed, still gives battles on the ‘little horse of steel’. The four-time winner of the Cycling Tour of Ecuador (1997, 2001, 2002 and 2004) trains to close the year in the II Tour to Galapagos 2018, only in the Masters category.

Multiple national champion, tricolor representative in games of the Olympic, World Cup and other international events, the rider confirmed that he will be in the test that will be held in Puerto Ayora, between October 5 and 7 next.

The ‘scarab’ said that the test in Galapagos not only attracted him to sports but also to “return to a beautiful land.”

In his elite time he took time to compete in four classics to the Galapagos, and won two of them. “They were unique experiences for the landscape, the flora and the fauna that we could admire,” he explained.

On this occasion, he said, he will have the chance to compete against the Colombian Víctor Hugo Peña, 44, who in 2000 won a stage of the Giro d’Italia and in 2003 he wore the shirt of the leader of the Tour de France. “It will be nice to face it, even if it’s ‘oldies’, and that the best guy wins,” he delighted.

Peña’s participation was confirmed by Jaime Calderón, a member of Galápagos Endemic Sport (GES), organizer of the event. The test has the endorsement of the Sports Federation of that province.

Chiles and Peña will have a tough fight in the B Masters category, the main one in the race, with the riobambeño Juan Carlos Bosmediano, 48, who is a multiple Pan-American Masters medalist.

The first edition of the Galapagos Tour was held in 2016, and the winner was the Chilean Rodrigo Berríos, in the elite category. The runner-up was also Chilean Jaime Marchant, who will return this year.

Three stages

The first will be an individual time trial, to be held on October 5 with a stretch of 15 km. The next day will be another 15 km of a circuit. On Sunday 7, the race will close with 84 km.
