Luis Verdosoto denounces that CNE violates rights by leaving Internet portals out of the way

Posted On 02 Jan 2019

Ecuadornews:

Electoral counselor Luis Verdesoto has denounced on Twitter that on the night of December 28 the Plenary of the National Electoral Council, CNE, violates rights by eliminating the approved reform that allowed electoral promotion in web portals, despite the prior consensus to which he had joined the president of the organization, Diana Atamaint.

Verdosoto maintains that by preventing electoral promotion on the Internet, rights are violated, giving rise to legal actions against the electoral authority. It argues that international conventions, which prevail before the law, underline the fundamental nature of the Internet as a channel of communication with emphasis on electoral processes. And that the performance of the CNE Plenary violates the principle of maximum disclosure of information. “Our obligation is the maximum disclosure of electoral information to protect the rights of citizens to informed voting,” he added.

He also argued that the CNE, in attempting to impede the electoral process through the Internet, violates the right to choose the means to inform oneself. “The resources of the State cannot be used to favor one means over another,” said Verdesoto. (I)
