Ricardo Patiño said that since October 20, the compensation payments to farmers of the northern border will begin. This amount was offered by Colombia, for the damages caused by glyphosate spraying.
Around 4,600 families will receive $ 3,000. $ 15 million will be awarded in total.
Daniel Alarcón, President of the Federation of Farmers Organizations of the Ecuadorian Border Area of Sucumbios said: “The amount is very little compared to what we have lost, but we will continue our struggle with another demand we have underway”.
Alarcon referred to the complaint against the American company DynCorp, which performed fumigations on the border.
