Ecuadornews:
Afro-Ecuadorians also hope to be included in the dialogue proposed by President Lenin Moreno. “The government has met with all sectors, but the afros have not yet been called,” said leader David Quiñónez yesterday.
Uriel Carriel, the leader of the group, says that a political approach is needed. “The Afro people have not had the ability to present a logic of convergence as we have been doing so far.” He affirmed that the dialogue is good but to obtain the results it must be political and pose social development.
According to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), in Ecuador, there are 1’041,559 Afro-descendants, who represent 7.2% of the national population.
Guillermo Leone stated that it is necessary for Afro-Ecuadorians to be considered in public politics and decision-making bodies because the aspirations of this group have not yet been fulfilled. (I)
