Álvaro Noboa asks Lenín Moreno to comply with the measure ordered by the Human Rights Committee

The businessman Álvaro Noboa asks President Lenín Moreno to comply with the measures dictated by the United Nations Human Rights Committee, including the registration of his presidential candidacy for the elections on February 7.

Álvaro Noboa asks Lenín Moreno to comply with the measure ordered by the Human Rights Committee

Noboa, nominated as a presidential candidate in Ecuador by the Social Justice movement, in a letter addressed to Moreno indicates that on January 6, 2021, the Committee demanded this decision from Ecuador, which was formally notified by the UN through the corresponding diplomatic channels. .

“I would like to emphasize that Ecuador is a state party to the United Nations that ratified, since March 6, 1969, both the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Optional Protocol to said convention, which allows the Human Rights Committee to know of individual cases against Ecuador for violation of human rights. (…) ”, He says in the letter dated January 9, 2021.

Noboa insists that Ecuador is internationally bound to comply with the measures dictated by the UN Human Rights Committee.

He says that in contempt of this measure, the ballot papers are being printed without the inclusion of his name as a presidential candidate.

He adds that this non-compliance could have serious international consequences for the country, “including the lack of international legitimacy of the result of the February 2021 elections and the fact that the elected president is in a situation similar to that of Nicolás Maduro. Such non-compliance could even constitute, together with other factors, sufficient reasons for the OAS to apply the Inter-American Democratic Charter ”.

Noboa states that it is not only his political rights, but that of all Ecuadorians and what is happening is not limited to national interest but also has very serious international implications. “The only option that Ecuador has to maintain international trust is to abide by the UN measures and the judgments of the Electoral Contentious Tribunal, registering and qualifying me as a presidential candidate.” (I)
