Asylum to Syrian President Would be Against International Law
There is the possibility that Ecuador gives political asylum to the President of Syria, Bashar al-Assad. According to analysts such action would imply a violation of international law.
During an interview that the president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, granted to the newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo, Brazil, he said that his government, would consider the request if it’s made and study it in order to grant asylum to al-Assad. “Any person seeking asylum in Ecuador, will obviously be consider it as a human being whose human rights must be respected,” said Correa.
Investigations of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights revealed that the civil war has left more than 42,000 since March 2011. While the UN General Assembly in August approved a resolution that condemned the human rights violations and the use of heavy weapons by the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Ecuador abstained from voting.
