Augusto Barrera says the Fires are Being Caused

Augusto Barrera: “Please do not burn garbage, do not think that burning the piece of land will improve it, it won’t improve anything, this can become an issue out of control.”

The mayor of Quito, Augusto Barrera says that every day 25 to 30 wildfires occur, which are man-made 99% of the time.

According to the mayor, the heavy fire yesterday in Pasochoa, southeast of Quito, was given due the people burning their terrains thinking that is going to improve soil conditions.

“Please do not burn garbage, do not think that burning the piece of land will improve it, it won’t improve anything, this can become an issue out of control,” said Barrera.

The city’s mayor calls upon the citizens to raise awareness and definitely prevent these fires of occurring.

The Prosecutors’ Office and the Judicial Police have provided two telephone mechanisms to denounce attempts of fires by people (2505560 and 1-800 DELITO). (MZ)
