Bishops insist on dialogue and respect
Yesterday, bishops issued a communiqué in which they did not overlook the incident by the statements of the Secretary of the Presidency, Alexis Mera, who called the Archbishop of Guayaquil, Antonio Arregui, as “an insolent messenger of the right.”
For the bishops, that statement was unfortunate. “We appreciate the recent expressions manifested by authorized government representatives, in which we recognize the desire to overcome the prevailing situation.”
The expressions of Mera, they said, “implied a limitation on the right of the pastors of the Church to exercise their own mission to enlighten the realities and social situations with the Gospel.”
They were supported by a group of citizens who felt that the government should offer a public apology for the gravity of the offense against Monsignor Antonio Arregui.
