Challenge of 3 women, lower figure of almost 11,000 crimes in Zone 8

Posted On 06 Sep 2018

Ecuadornews:

In the first six days of September, seven violent deaths have occurred in Zone 8 (Guayaquil, Samborondón and Duran), four of them occurred between Saturday and Monday in Durán.

In the same canton yesterday the new Interior Minister, María Paula Romo; the governor of Guayas, Juana Vallejo, and the commander of Police of Zone 8, Tanya Varela, announced that the three assumed the challenge of facing the crime that this year, according to data of the National Police, registers 10,999 crimes.

Although the figures of the Police speak of a reduction of 17% in terms of the crimes registered the previous year, the same police commander is aware that the figures are not all and that the perception of insecurity has grown.

And as a response to the violent events that took place in Durán yesterday, 132 uniformed people were introduced to the surveillance of that canton, which according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior in the first semester of 2017 had 6 violent deaths, while in the 2018 are already 13 cases.

Another 268 police officers will be presented this afternoon in Guayaquil to reinforce 40 critical points of the city. Commander Varela said that 75% of violent deaths in the area are due to criminal violence and explained that there were organizations whose members have served their sentences in prisons and tried to regroup and recover their territories. That, said Varela, would have happened in Durán over the weekend.

Another of the crimes of concern is robbery with death, since according to data from the Attorney’s Office of Guayas, the figure would have increased from 9 in 2017 to 12 until August of this year. So far this year, 5,736 robberies have been registered to people in the three cantons that make up Zone 8.

The 54-year-old woman who died in Durán on Monday increased that figure. The police commander said that they would already have clues to clarify the crime of the merchant.

Other cases that have alarmed the community are the crimes of violence against women and the nuclear family. Until July of this year, the Police had counted 13,138 calls for help for domestic violence, 35 for sexual abuse and 17 for rape.

The governor of Guayas took advantage of the meeting to mention that the ordinance that regulates the circulation of two men on a motorcycle would be analyzed in a meeting with Mayor Jaime Nebot.

The civil servant mentioned that it would be tried to extend the schedules.

“Prisons will not pass to the Ministry of the Interior, this secretariat is being explored that has autonomy that manages jails (…) and would have to be related to the Ministry of the Interior.” María Paula Romo, Minister

“I like a word to define the Police, is our protector and to be our protector what better to be close to the citizens (…), the UPC are properly organized.” Juana Vallejo, governor

“75% of deaths are from criminal violence. There are organizations that have served their sentences and try to regroup and take their territory, which is why these confrontations exist.” .
