On Tuesday, the regime leader Rafael Correa, prompted as a challenge to the opposition to collect signatures for consultation regarding the oil exploitation in Yasuni. The president said that if this is done, the government will have popular support.

“Understand that there has already been too much misery, and we will collect signatures for the referendum. We know that the Ecuadorian people will believe us because we’re real, with dignity, because we seek everything for everyone, all for the country, nothing for us,” he said during his tour of the canton of Cayambe, Pichincha.

Correa said that despite the financial initiative “was a failure,” it qualified success “creating environmental awareness.” He added that “the main problem is not oil Yasuni but deforestation” of the Amazon rainforest.
