Ecuador Accuses the IACHR of Being “Inquisitive” in El Universo Case

Posted On 29 Mar 2012

Ecuador’s foreign minister, Ricardo Patino, today accused the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) of “inquisitive” and said it has gone beyond its duties when they issued injunctions in El Universo newspaper case.

The foreign minister met with six members of the IACHR to request explanations of the precautionary measures requested on 21 February to Quito, after president Rafael Correa sued for libel a columnist and three executives of the newspaper, which were sentenced to prison.

However, once Correa decided to forgive the conviction, the Commission withdrew the precautionary measures, in which they asked not to execute the judgment until a hearing is held at its headquarters in Washington, scheduled for this week but It was canceled. (FL)
