Ecuador assured to the CAN that safeguard is sustained on regional regulations
The Ministry of Foreign Trade of Ecuador accused this January 9 to the General Secretariat of the Andean Community (CAN) to have committed an administrative error and assured that the customs safeguard measures, applied to products of Colombia and Peru, is based on regional regulations.
For its part, the General Secretariat of the CAN affirmed on Tuesday, January 6 that Ecuador could not apply the safeguard against imports from its neighbors by the currency devaluation adopted in these countries, as long as the regional body are not any comments.
The Ecuadorian government established on January 5 a safeguard measure (customs duty) of 7% to Peruvian products and 21% to Colombians, for the purpose of protect itself against currency devaluations operated in those countries.
The Secretariat of the CAN argued that recently, on Tuesday January 6 it heard about the petition of safeguard measures from Ecuador, and noted that from that date the deadlines to take a decision ran.
