Ecuadornews:
The government has halted the construction of a wall on the northern bank of the Zarumilla canal on the border with Peru, Ecuadorian Foreign Minister María Fernanda Espinosa said yesterday.
The minister, who participated yesterday in Lima at the meeting of the Andean Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, discussed the issue with her Peruvian counterpart Ricardo Luna. “We have requested the meeting. I think it is imperative to reach a definitive agreement on this matter and I also believe that we have had a permanent dialogue on this matter with Foreign Minister Luna,” she said.
The border municipalities of Aguas Verdes, in Peru and Huaquillas, in Ecuador, are a single and bustling city with two international telephone codes. The area has generated concern for almost a five years because of the so-called ‘ant-smuggling.’ (I)
