The Ministry of Tourism officially presented the Digital Nomads campaign, in order to strengthen the Nomad Visa modality that has been in force since April 2022. This was within the framework of World Tourism Day, on Wednesday, September 27, 2022.
At a commemorative event, Niels Olsen, head of this State portfolio, recounted the management undertaken since May 2021 and highlighted the figures that account for the reactivation of the industry in the country. In addition, recognition was given to the creators of high-quality digital content who applied for the Ecuador Film Residency program, presented in June 2022.
In the middle of a dialogue between Juan Carlos Holguín, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility and the Minister of Tourism, the characteristics, objectives and benefits of this visa modality were detailed, which seeks that foreign travelers who work remotely, can do so in Ecuador for up to two years, and at the same time tour the country, injecting resources into the national economy with their internal trips.
Nancy Connor, an entomologist who already has the Nomadic Visa from Ecuador, also participated in the dialogue, mentioning that having a natural laboratory like Ecuador is valuable for her profession. “It is a place where you walk two steps and find thousands of species and you can also find the answers to what we do not know,” she said, explaining what it is like to work in the country from the eyes of the scientist.
The head of the Foreign Ministry indicated that in many countries the trend is to work remotely and this means having a vision of experiences, of knowing the world “and Ecuador is that scenario that is consolidated as one of the most important attractions for this concept that is done today reality,” Holguín said. He also assured that the Nomadic Visa is the result of long-term intersectoral work.
For his part, Minister Olsen explained that in order to apply for the Nomad Visa, interested parties need to have a valid passport, a police record, demonstrate income from a foreign source of at least three unified basic salaries, have medical insurance and pay the costs of the procedure that add up to 460 dollars.
