Government will strengthen Public Policies to combat violence against women
Accompanied by women government officials, President Guillermo Lasso announced the measures that the Executive will adopt in its plan to strengthen public policies to combat violence against women.
“Our desire is to strengthen everything that has been done in public policy to combat gender violence and by all the means at our disposal we will continue to combat these events that unfortunately occur practically daily,” said President Lasso.
The President indicated that one of the first actions will be “a package of measures to combat violence against women in all the ministries and entities of the Executive,” through a “specialized unit in each public entity.” And for this he will sign an Executive Decree in the coming days.
Lasso invited the other Powers of the State to do the same. “Together we must change this terrible pattern of behavior and confront the macho, abusive and sometimes, unfortunately, even criminal culture,” he said.
In addition, the Head of State indicated that he had received “important contributions and suggestions to strengthen the application of the Law for the Eradication of Violence Against Women and the National Agreement for the Eradication of Violence”, however, he warned that “the defense of women’s rights cannot be politicized”.
Because acts of violence occur in “everyday life, in homes, in workplaces, on the streets, on public transport”, and that, according to the president, “it is a social disease aggravated after the pandemic”, He assured that he will meet with women’s organizations, production chambers, universities, educational communities, the media, and local governments.
“Tackling gender-based violence is everyone’s task, not just the government’s,” President Lasso emphasized, adding, “we must do it together without allowing the political use of a cause of such importance.”
Finally, he recognized that there can be no effective application of a law if there is no economic budget, for which he promised “to make the necessary analysis and carry out a kind of fiscal pact for the application of the law and the plan of fight against violence against women”.
“It doesn’t matter that we think differently, the important thing is to see each other face to face so that each one knows the vision they have of the problem.”
