The Court of the Provincial Court of Justice of Pichincha ratified preventive detention against María de los Ángeles Duarte, for the alleged breach of a legitimate decision of the competent authority.

María de los Ángeles Duarte, who was Minister of Transportation in the Rafael Correa regime , was sentenced to eight years in prison for the crime of bribery in the 2012-2016 Bribery case. The sentence is enforceable.

However, the former official faces another process for the crime of non-compliance with a legitimate decision of the competent authority.

This crime was committed after he entered the Argentine Embassy , in Quito, as “guest for humanitarian reasons.”

Duarte was wearing an electronic shackle and had to report to an authority in a competent manner. However, it failed to comply with these measures. (I)
