El Niño phenomenon requires coordinated action
Rodney Martinez, international director of CIIFEN, warned of the consequences that could arise from the presence of El Niño phenomenon, as it happened in 1977-78, and the need to take coordinated action to face the natural phenomenon, and the most important: to have informed and prepared citizens.
Martinez said it is important to have as a reference El Niño of 1977-78, because its impact around the world was of 100 000 million, distributed asymmetrically in all countries.
In the case of Ecuador, there was a loss of 2 800 million according to figures from the Andean Development Corporation (CAF), 352 dead and 30,000 homeless. The effect on gross domestic product (GDP) was 14.6%, and there was a decline in the economy of 1, 8%.
