Femicide, a recurrent and unpunished crime
Violence against women is not a new topic, what is surprising is to discover that the main aggressors are thier own partners and ex-partners of the victims, impunity for these murders reaches 98%.
In mid-2012 the report “global burden of armed violence 2011″ was published. During the development of the research, the authors found a serious problem: the lack of statistics in several countries.
For this reason they decided to refer to police reports, although these reports don’t segment crimes by sex.
The study covered 111 countries from 2004 to 2009, this represents 56% of the female population, determining that in the case oc crimes against women the aggressor is the couple, and murders are committed with firearms.
According to this report, 66 thousand women are murdered every year in the world, representing 17% of the total of violent deaths.
Of the 25 States with the largest number of women deaths, over 50% are in America: four in the Caribbean, four in Central America and six in South America. Seven in Europe, three in Asia and one in Africa
Peru, for example, is one of the few countries with official figures, there, between 2009 and 2011, 384 femicides were committed and 116 attacks, according to the Observatory of crime.
After a long struggle, in Ecuador, Femicide has been typified as a crime after the brutal murder of the model Karina de el Pozo. Currently those who attack or kill a woman can pay it with imprisonment of up to 35 years.
