Gerd Müller congratulates Messi for overcoming his record
The German soccer player legend and scorer Gerd Müller was happy after learning that his record of 85 goals in a calendar year (1972) was passed on Sunday by the Argentine star Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona).
“My record of 85 goals in 60 games, back in 1972, was surpassed 40 years later by the world’s best player, Lionel Messi, and I’m very happy for him,” said Müller.
The iconic striker described Messi as an “incredible player, a giant who is also very friendly and a formal professional.”
Lionel Messi achieved his 85th and 86th goals of 2012 against Betis soccer team on the Spanish League Championship, which surpassed Müller’s record, who scored 85 goals for Bayern Munich and the German national soccer team in 1972 (the year his country won the Euro Cup).
