The winner of $ 30 million will be the team that will create the first robot to be able to send video images as it travels 500 meters in the surface of the moon.
Thus, the competition organizers wish to promote the development of automated vehicles, low-cost space exploration, and they expect to have a winner for 2015.
Sponsored by Internet giant Google, the Lunar X-Prize will be contested by 29 teams from 17 countries. Peter Diamandis, chairman of X-Prize Foundation said: “The private race to the moon is already underway.”
