“No official is above the law and justice must determine whether the Vice President committed an irregularity,” insists the Executive.

President Daniel Noboa at a meeting in Carondelet on May 28, 2024.
The Government of Daniel Noboa attacked this Friday, June 14, 2024, against the opposition majority in the National Assembly, shortly after this Function denied authorization for a criminal prosecution of the vice president, Verónica Abad, in confrontation with the President .
“Today’s vote in the National Assembly is the clearest evidence of what we already knew: a dirty political pact in which impunity and personal and party interests prevail over the dignity and justice that the country and its citizens deserve. citizens,” he said in a statement from the Ministry of Government.
However, he warned that “no official is above the law and justice must determine if the vice president committed an irregularity and it is related to the case that her son is accused of,” he added.
In this regard, the State Attorney General’s Office also spoke out. In a statement, he noted that this institution “will continue with the processing of the so-called ‘Nene’ case, in accordance with procedural requirements, in order to clarify the facts and determine the responsibilities of the people investigated.”
She pointed out that she will continue this process against Abad, once her term as Vice President ends, in May 2025.
“Concussion does not prescribe”
With 75 votes, mostly from the Correismo, the Social Christian Party and Construye, Parliament did not authorize Abad to be criminally prosecuted for alleged concussion in a case involving her son, Francisco Barreiro.
In a statement, Parliament clarified that, according to article 233 of the Constitution ” concussion is a criminal offense that does not prescribe, therefore, the competent authority could continue the corresponding legal actions, once the term of the Vice President of the Republic”.
The opposition sees in this case an attempt by the President to get rid of Abad, with whom he has had deep differences since he assumed power. If he seeks re-election, the Constitution obliges Noboa to entrust power to the vice president, although he has raised a question with the Attorney General’s Office on the issue.
As soon as he assumed power, Noboa sent Verónica Abad into exile as Ambassador to Israel, and entrusted her with solving the conflict that country is going through with the Islamist group Hamas.
“Take charge”
In a statement, the Correista bench of the Citizen Revolution urged Noboa to take charge of the conflict with Abad and stressed that “using political power to solve internal problems is corruption.”
In the statement, the Ministry of Government maintains that “the political nature is evident” with the resolution of the Plenary Session of the Legislature. “Those who were enemies recently, now it turns out that they have negotiated under the table,” he points out.
The Executive says that “in recent weeks, the PSC, RC and Construye benches have joined together to stop the Government’s actions, by blocking bills, limiting its ability to veto laws and attempting to implement political trials against several ministers.
