Government condemns “discriminatory statements” by Correa
Ecuadornews:
The Ecuadorian government criticized the statements made by former President Rafael Correa on the fact that the current president’s disability, Lenin Moreno, caused him a “bitterness” that leads him to act in a “pathological” manner against him.
Through the Minister of Housing and President of the Council of Equalities, Xavier Torres, the Executive considered that these statements, which appear in an interview published on June 24 by the Spanish media “El Diario”, reflect the “poverty of heart” of Correa
Torres refuted that being an ex-president who “filled his mouth to promote and defend human rights, today do the opposite and transgress with his statements Article 11 of the Constitution that states that no one may be discriminated against because of disability and that the law shall sanction all form of discrimination, “reads a statement issued today by the National Communication Secretariat.
The document, which includes a statement made on the eve by the head of Equalities, notes that “however, more important is the moral sanction and the rejection of citizenship for the poverty of heart and warmth towards people with disabilities who are in a vulnerable condition.”
Correa has recently been linked to a case for the attempted kidnapping of an ex-deputy in 2012, and must appear before the National Court of Justice next Monday.
In recent months he has claimed to be a victim of political and media persecution promoted by the current president and former co-religionist, Moreno, with whom he maintains a strong struggle.
Interpellated by the Spanish media about what he believed was the cause of the attitude of the current president, which comes from the same movement of Correa, he said that “he has been a professional impostor, a wolf disguised as a lamb, without convictions, but I believe that there is also something pathological. ”
“Sometimes, people who have suffered a tragedy like the one he suffered, he was a sportsman, they put a bullet in his back and he was sentenced to a wheelchair, they keep a bitterness, a frustration with life, a frustration towards others who have not suffered this misfortune that when they have power deform that bitterness, “the interview of the Spanish newspaper.
“We believe that the matter is also going on, because it is too serious already, it is pathological,” Correa adds, always according to that medium.
For Xavier Torres, these statements “offend not only President Moreno, but all persons with disabilities and their families, more than a million” in Ecuador.
And goes further to point out that “an expression of this nature, not only constitutes a fact of discrimination, is a very great ignorance that also shows repressed frustration on the part of the issuer. The pathology is reflected in a self-determination when there is poverty of heart and a reaction of this person (Rafael Correa) to consider that the world is his enemy, “condemned the minister.
At 65, Moreno uses a wheelchair since he suffered a point-blank shot in Quito by criminals who assaulted him, losing mobility in both legs.
His physical condition has led him to promote pioneering policies in the country on disability and to act as special envoy of the Secretary General of the United Nations on Disability and Accessibility. (I)
