Hikers die at Los Illinizas
Posted On 22 Oct 2012
Yesterday, three hikers fell into a 200 feet-deep crevasse in the area of Los Illinizas, located about 55 km southwest of Quito, Ecuador.
The deceased have been identified as Maria Fernanda, 25, Sergio, 28, and Freddy, 28.
It is believed that the deceased fell due to poor visibility over the constant and thick mists, and also by the lack of a proper guide.
The Illinizas are considered the best acclimatization mountains in the country, and are frequently used as a preparatory climb for highest peaks such as Cotopaxi, Chimborazo and Cayambe. (MZ)
