Israel destroys tunnels used by Hamas in Gaza
Posted On 19 Jul 2014
Israeli troops backed by tanks and aviation, yesterday began destroying tunnels used by Hamas in Gaza to carry weapons and launch attacks on the second day of attacks terrestrial which left 47 Palestinians dead.
“Forces of Givati infantry brigade (…) have found, so far, 13 ports of tunnels that were used for smuggling weapons and to carry out terrorist attacks,” the military said in a statement.
The need to destroy these tunnels has been the lifeline of the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to order the ground operation, fearing that these are used to attack Israeli civilians.
A total of 339 Palestinians have been killed and 2,000 have been wounded since the start of the Israeli offensive on July 8.
