Jaime Cucalón: “Assembled cars must compete”

Ecuadornews:

The cars imported from the European Union (EU) have arrived loaded with benefits as a result of the multiparty agreement between Ecuador and that bloc, in force since January 1st, confirmed yesterday the president of the Ecuadorian Automotive Association (AEA), Jaime Cucalón.
According to Cucalón, there are already European cars in the market at $ 19,990, which compete with other brands. “More EU affordable models and brands have arrived the country because tariffs have started to fall by 5%, and this has led to a 10% price reduction of vehicles previously imported,” said Cucalón, who also presented the Autoshow 2017, to be held from the 29th of this month until July 2nd, at the Simon Bolivar Convention Center in Guayaquil.
On the statements of David Molina, executive of the Chamber of the Automotive Industry of Ecuador (Cinae), who said last week that an armed vehicle in Europe that costs the same as one assembled in Ecuador “made no sense and that it had to be analyzed,” Cucalón suggested a competition for quality and price. “I think there are assemblers who have benefited for 50 years from a series of tax benefits and must begin to compete for quality and price, but not for conditions imposed by the national government. Market shares are earned, market shares are not imposed,” he said. (I)
