Japan threatened by giant tsunami

Much of Japan’s Pacific coast could be inundated by a tsunami of more than 34 meters high if a powerful earthquake strokes offshore. A panel of experts informed that any tsunami created by a magnitude-9.0 earthquake, could top 34 at its highest.

The revised tsunami projections were in a report released last Saturday, the last tsunami toppled the Fukushima nuclear power plant on March 11, 2011. The latest forecast showed a tsunami of up to 21 meters could strike near the Hamaoka nuclear plant.

According to a report from the Japanese government a strong earthquake could hit the Tokyo Bay region and affect the Tokyo-Yokohama metropolitan area with a maximum seismic intensity of 7 on the Japanese scale. (AV)
