Julissa Unamuno: Born to be Scout
Once I heard from an “old wolf” say that a true Scout is always born and not made, and the best example to embody that phrase is Maria Julissa Unamuno Lopez, currently Head of Marine Scout “Guayas” group.
Her Cub Scouts, leaders, tours, activities, are among the thousands of things every day with passion and planning Julissa does with love. We talked to her and she told us her story of how this whole adventure began to become a Scout leader in Guayaquil.
When and how began all this love for the Scouts?
I was eight years old and I was studying at Providence College. A group of Scouts arrived to give a demonstration there and that is how all started. Three months later, I became a Scout.
How long have you been serving as a Scout and what is your rank?
I have been there for 30 years and I am a Wood Badge. I am an “Old Wolf”
You used to be a Scouter, now you are head of the group. How did you feel this change?
First, I will never stop being a Scouter, but after being a member for many years in other groups of Scouts, become leader was very different. At first I had doubts and fears, but thank God my family and friends supported me and they made them more than me, they were those who managed to take a chance I integrate my group of Sea Scouts “Guayas”.
Currently, how many children and leaders are there in your group?
We are a group made up of 40 children and 8 leaders, all of us from Guayaquil.
And your family, What do you think about how much time you spend with the Scouts?
I achieved that everyone in my family love my passion. It was not difficult. My husband supports me a lot and my kids love to be Scouts. And nothing is difficult when you are born for something. We were born to be Scouts.
As leader of the Guayas, what are some of your functions?
Usually, every weekend we got together to do different activities. Along with other leaders, we organize workshops, dynamic, camps, yincanas games, we travel and much more.
What do you expect from your group and your offspring Scouts?
Based on the principles of honor, loyalty and above all the service, such as the Scouts contribute significantly to society, becoming an example and role models.
Meanwhile, Julissa will continue to contribute to build a better world with her particular lifestyle based in love to God, her country and her home.
